Deep Cleaning

At An Dental, our dental surgeons are dedicated to providing you with a safe and clinically proven dental implants procedure.

What is deep cleaning?

Deep cleaning, also known as root planing, is a non surgical treatment and is very similar to scaling and polishing. Your dentist or periodontist will clean beneath the gum line and inside the gum pockets with a dental instrument, or ultrasonic device to get rid of the tartar and bacteria from your tooth. Your tooth root surface will be smoothened. This removal of the film of tartar prevents further accumulation of tartar and bacteria; and allows your gums to attach to the teeth again.

Periodontitis, also known as gum disease or periodontal disease, is a common oral health condition that can ravage the gum and bone that support your teeth, leading to loose teeth. This results in gum and bone loss and can cause your teeth to loosen and fall out. The bacteria that is trapped in the gum pockets emit fumes that can cause bad breath, or lead to other oral health problems.

What is involved in a deep cleaning procedure?

Depending on the depth of the gum pocket, your gums will be anaesthetised with a numbing gel, or a tiny injection will be given to numb the gums and teeth. Your dentist or periodontist will clean beneath the gum line and inside the gum pockets with a dental instrument, or ultrasonic device to get rid of the tartar and bacteria from your tooth. Your tooth root surface will be smoothened. You will feel some vibrations on your teeth but it is generally a very well tolerated procedure.

Who needs deep cleaning?

People who have Periodontitis, where there is bone loss around the teeth. Deep cleaning is needed to remove bacteria and tartar trapped underneath the gums to prevent further accumulation of tartar and bacteria. This allows your gums to heal and attach to the teeth again.

How do I take care of my gums after deep cleaning?

Bacteria and food can accumulate rapidly after the deep cleaning appointment if you don’t brush properly! So excellent oral hygiene is key. You will be given home brushing instructions by our dentists and nurses to make sure tartar and plaque doesn’t accumulate under the gums again.

Your dentist or periodontist will also likely suggest 3 to 4 monthly periodontal maintenance visits. There maintenance visits are like scaling and polishing visits. But we will check for residual gum pockets and clean these pockets us if necessary.
