Periodontitis, also known as gum disease or periodontal disease, is a common oral health condition that can ravage the gums and bone that support your teeth, leading to loose teeth. This results in gum AND bone loss and can cause your teeth to loosen and fall out. Dentists always start with deep cleaning, also known as root planing to remove the bacteria and tartar first. This is to control the infection and disease. Once the infection is controlled, there is a possibility of reconstructing the bone and gums destroyed by gum disease through surgical means.
Your gums will be anaesthetised with a numbing gel, and a tiny injection given to numb the gums and teeth. Your dentist or periodontist will make a little incision in the gum pocket to exposed the eroded bone. The tooth roots will be cleaned and smoothened and a regenerative gel placed to stimulate your own stem cells to regrow the bone and gums around the teeth. This gel is usually used in conjunction with a bone graft. A bone graft can come from different origins. The bone graft is then implanted in the affected area where the bone was destroyed. Bone grafting acts as a scaffold and allows your own cells to grow around the tooth. When new bone grows, it will hold your tooth in place, preventing tooth loss in the long run.
Sometimes, a thin membrane may also be used to hold the bone graft in place. The incision is then closed and stitched back into place.
People who have had deep cleaning done for treatment of Periodontitis. Once the inflammation has resolved and the infection is controlled, your Periodontist will assess the situation to see if the destroyed bone and gum can be rebuilt and the area rejuvenated. Sometimes the gum disease resolves on its own after deep cleaning. With some people though, the gums and bone need external stimulation from a stem cell stimulator or a bone graft to help with bone and gum growth after gum disease treatment.
