SEDATION DENTISTRY

If you are one of the many people that do not like the sound of the dental drill or just have an unexplained desire to NOT go to the dentist – don’t worry! We’ve got you covered!

An Dental is one of the few nitrous and sedation-certified dental clinics in Singapore and our clinic is trained to take good care of people with dental phobia. We have a range of advanced management techniques to help you along, and one of our most popular requests is for sedation dentistry (including laughing gas and intravenous sedation), both for children and adults alike.

Nitrous oxide (ie. laughing gas) sedation and IV sedation with a trained anesthetist are traditionally and safely used to deliver dental treatment to anxious patients in a more calming environment and mindset.

WHAT IS SEDATION DENTISTRY?

Sedation dentistry in Singapore involves administering a sedative drug before or during a dental procedure to help patients feel calm and comfortable, especially during long procedures. It is especially used for kids' dentistry as the little ones tend to be more hesitant in unfamiliar environments.

Although sedation dentistry is often referred to as sleep dentistry, patients are almost always awake so they can hear and respond to the dentist’s instructions.

What kinds of sedation are available?

The following types of sedation are typically used in dentistry:

INHALATIONAL SEDATION (VIA NITROUS OXIDE)

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is a mild and effective sedative agent that’s mixed with oxygen. It is inhaled through a small mask over your nose, and is completely colourless and odourless. Contrary to its name, laughing gas (nitrous oxide) does not necessarily make you laugh – what it does, however, is slow down your nervous system and manage any fear and anxiety you’ll typically feel. You will feel calm and comfortable throughout the entire dental procedure.

IV DRIP SEDATION

Sedation is administered through a vein and effects take place more quickly. This method allows your dentist to adjust the sedation throughout your procedure.

GENERAL ANAESTHESIA

You will be in deep sleep throughout the procedure.
At An Dental, we commonly use nitrous oxide and IV sedation. Their sedating effects wear off almost immediately after the procedure. There is no downtime; you are safe to resume regular activities after!
